The Black Umbrella came about when Mike Hamilton approached Natangwe Shipanga with his idea for a directory that would allow members of the Waltham Forest Community to practise group economics and support local Black Businesses.

The project managed to get off the ground with help from another friend Joanna Vasanth from MVP Media and a grant from the St James Street Big Local in association with UnLtd, a foundation for social entrepreneurs.

As well as hosting a business directory, The Black Umbrella would like to become a central hub for the Waltham Forest Black Business community organising events, connecting people and providing business support.
